As someone who loves studying new languages, I stumbled across Mindsnacks one day while searching for interesting language-learning app.
No matter how much I am curious and determine to master a foreign language, boring lessons is something I wish to avoid, as there is little to no motivation for me to follow the exercises. Mindsnacks is pretty much a gem amongst many other apps in this case.
Greeting me after successfully signing in is a refreshing menu with cute icons of animals. Awesome first impression strikes! Each language (Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and Italian) has its separated app. I downloaded the SAT language-learning app because I have been having nightmares preparing for this hellish test, that’s why I began my Mindsnacks trial with high expectation, hoping it can help my goal easier to achieve.

In the review section, you are shown the list of words together with their illustrations, audio clips, definition and even antonyms! Skim through this and try to remember as much as you can, then you are up to play the fun part: games!
As advertised on the main website, Mindsnacks sure is “games for your brain”. Mindsnacks allows you to enjoy lessons through a series of addicting mini games. Each app seems to has around 9 games to play to memorize the vocabulary:
Swell: Solving vocabulary question within a limited time. In this game, the time is illustrated as the sea level and what you have to do, is keeping it from draining completely. You have three lives and under the time pressure so you have to try your very best. After losing one live in this game, I realized how long had I been holding my breath trying to answer every question correctly!

Pounce: A game that allows you to practice vocabulary. In this game, you will have to tap one of naughty cats that are holding up the word which fits the best in each sentence. It’s a game with time limit so you can’t be too slow, and when you get the correct answer, the cat will smile at you cutely!
These are 9 games for you to play when you install the apps. I don’t know about other languages because I have only tried the Japanese app, but I heard Chinese has their own ninth mini game. I guess I have to try it out one day…. For SAT Vocabulary, it takes me longer to advance onto a higher level so I have yet found what miracle is hidden in other games. Can’t wait to try them out! But well first I need to fully understand and remember the vocabulary list for the lesson first.
Mindsnacks has a lot of lessons for you to slowly master: 400 lessons in total for 8 apps, each app has 50 lessons. For SAT Vocabulary, there are 25 levels in total, each features 20 commonly tested words. Pay only $20 to unlock all lessons in 8 apps with the All Language Pass or $5 to unlock Japanese Pass (or any other language you want to), and then you have a variety of lessons to choose from. This will save you a lot of time if you wish to study on some specific topics. There are some topics that are already familiar with the content (or most of it), therefore this gives you a chance to skip to the other ones.

Because the app is a game-based program, get yourself ready on many quests and gain experiences from playing mini games (with high score of course!) and hola~ Level up from an egg to probably… eh… an alien. It is very motivational and addictive I swear. Also, you have statistics for specific skills gathered in your profile. Even in each lesson, you will see how great or bad you perform in the games, and which words you have trouble with the most.
So, is it worth spending money on this app? You can tell from what I mentioned above though, I mean, this app is absolutely amazing! Colourful, entertaining, addicting, great animation, cute design, highly rich content… I could not find even one thing I hate about this app for now, that’s why here I am telling you: have a go and try it by yourself, you will not be disappointed!
