In the online education world, Busuu, a community-based educational app for IOS and Android devices, offers a variety of games, exercises, groups and other sources for learning foreign language. Busuu now has Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Turkish and English.
The English course has different levels for you to choose from, from A1 for Beginner to B2 for Upper Intermediate, and an extra Travel Course where you can study about basic expression, transportation, planning and accommodation,…. In each level, there are more than ten lessons to study. At Level A1.1, I began with Lesson 1: Meeting People – Part 1. This part contains a vocabulary section and a quiz section. When you begin, there are flashcard-typed slides. You can hear a short audio of the sentence shown on the screen. After three slides, you are given a small multiple-choice question where you listen to the phrase and choose the correct answer. It’s not hard to listen to at all for beginners. The next task is to drag and drop the phrases to its correct translation. Again, an easy-to-complete task. Another tasks I encountered are where I had to rearrange the words into correct order, or where I needed to tap the letters to complete the sentence. In all of these activities, you are allowed to listen to the phrases as many times as possible. As you continues onto the higher lesson level, there are more activities for you to do like writing, or studying grammar through similar methods as when you first started.
Busuu has delightful illustrations that can leave the users comfortable and focus using the app. The animation is smooth and there are interactive elements that can keep you curious and captivated. However these are not Busuu’s most attractive features. The feature that makes Busuu famous is probably one that allows you to have conversational practice with other users all over the world. This is pretty much like a community message box where you can type and chat live with other learners, either in pairs or in groups. Here, you can correct their writing exercises and improve their speaking abilities to make new friends. Or you can wait and see if someone is able to point out your mistakes and give you advice. You know what? This is brilliant since there is no faster way to learn something than doing the practical exercise and helping others. You and your friends will all improve greatly with it! And this feature is FREE!
The app is, of course, not free. If you can upgrade to Premium, you will have unlimited access to Grammar units, test your knowledge with quizzes, get immediate corrections on your writing exercises and learn up to 11 languages. The price ranges from $10 for one month, $50 for every six months and $70 for every 12 months. Compared this to other language-learning online tools, especially one like Rosetta Stone, this app is absolutely recommended. The money you have to spend will worth what you gain back from this app. With lessons that build up your vocabulary and skills slowly, your knowledge will be improved noticeably. This is what every learner looks for in a language-learning app.
